AUX Magazine

Problem

Despite representing a diverse swath of culture music magazines offer homogenous viewpoints that are top down and largely scripted.

Timeframe

10 weeks with an additional 2 weeks spent on collection and curation of magazine content.

Tools

InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Affinity Photo, Blender, GlichLab

Role/skills

Designer, Writer, Photographer, and Visual Artist.
What goes in to music? Not just sound or melody or even the words being sung but the experience that we enjoy as music? For most people that has probably changed in the last year.
Research
For research of AUX it was crucial to define the AUX readership. For most magazines readership can come from different entry points and as a result of different draws. With that I created a few persona's that reflected different entry points.
Defining Visual Style
For AUX’s style I was inspired by the brash, expressive, and subversive message of music at it’s most powerful.

The primary color is a deep off-black useful for creating for supporting tone and visual grounding.

For the secondary color I used a vibrant Yellow that would contrast well against the dark and work well with white when printed.
Content Curation

For content the biggest challenge was getting quality imagery of the artists featured in the collected articles. In some cases I substituted in my own photography for stories.
I also combined lower quality existing photography with graphic elements for a better result.

I ended up creating some custom imagery and art for AUX. Particularly for the feature article which was an interview for an album cover artist I made several album covers to go with the story.
Retrospective
AUX definitely had challenges in research in defining the scope, in construction, and especially in creation and curation of content. That said I think the end result has a defined voice that suites it's content and audience.
